MobileBeat: SkyEye turns your phone into a personal surveillance system

http://mobile.venturebeat.com/2010/07/12/mobilebeat-startup-competition-meet-the-next-generation-of-consumer-applications/

MobileBeat: OwnYourInfo puts your private data in a mobile lock box

OwnYourInfo is one of 20 promising startups included in the MobileBeat 2010 Startup Competition and is in the running for one of two coveted Tesla Awards.
OwnYourInfo gives users a secure, neatly-ordered location to store and view their most important data through their mobile phones — basically turning your handset into a locked filing cabinet. Its goal: to eliminate the hardcopy and hard-drive files and sticky notes that clutter your physical and digital desktops.
The application can store everything from whole documents to bits and pieces of information. You can file that information under any of seven categories: personal, health, career, finance, travel, automotive and housing. The company is so confident in its security measures that it recommends scanning and storing things like passports, tax returns, and college transcripts.
“The application goes beyond data storage with a unique sharing model that allows users to set permissions on their sharing requests,” the company says. “For example, a user might send his resume to six people as read-only files, and prevent forwarding. Then, once opened, he’d receive notice saying that his document was opened by john@email.com at 1 p.m. at such-and-such a location.”
Users can edit these permissions options at any time, or push updated files to other users they have already shared information with. For example, if you changed addresses, all you would have to do is update the data once within the OwnYourInfo application, and it would automatically be changed for everyone who had received that info via the app.
The application is launching this month, and the company plans to have it be accessible from any device that has access to the internet without any downloads or plugins required. The service will be free for the first 30 days and then cost $5 a month for 1 gigabyte of storage.
The company may be able to take advantage of the attention being paid to privacy issues, given so many concerns around what more invasive players like Google and Facebook are doing.
“I think the concern over Facebook and Google has created a lot of buzz about privacy, so yes, there is more demand today than there would have been last year,” says OwnYourInfo President and Founder Mark Black. “The amount of data being collected is both amazingly useful and very frightening, and regulation will have to become increasingly strong to keep data mining practices safe.”
OwnYourInfo identifies Watchdox and Orggit as competitors, but the former lacks the same storage capabilities, and the latter hasn’t nailed the sharing model yet.
“Right now we are making sure everything works on the web app and planning a rapid development of a corresponding mobile app,” Black says. “We are also working with TRUSTe to get their EU Safe Harbor certification so we can legally operate in the European Union, and trying to grow our beta test group.”
OwnYourInfo says it will use the feedback gleaned from its beta to simplify its interface and build on functionality that could make the app more useful for families and small groups.

MobileBeat: Emantras brings classrooms to mobile devices with Mobl21

Emantras is one of 20 promising startups included in the MobileBeat 2010 Startup Competition, and is in the running for one of two coveted Tesla Awards.
Educators looking to reach their students outside of the classroom may have a new tool at their disposal. Emantras, a company that develops online and mobile educational tools, has today officially launched Mobl21, a platform for creating, managing and distributing educational content to the web and mobile devices.
Mobl21 targets individual students and teachers as well as institutions like colleges and universities. Each account allows the users to create educational content like study guides, flash cards or quizzes, then manage the content to specific groups and, finally, publish it to mobile devices or social networks. The institutional account appoints an admin and allows that person to add additional users to create and publish. Accounts range from free to $9,600 per year.
Several other companies are offering educational mobility services, including Blackboard, Float Learning and Outstart.
The Fremont, Calif.-based company, founded in 2000, appears to have some well-known customers, including Pearson Education, Nasa, IKEA, Lufthansa, Siemens and Danfoss.

Facebook shifting away from apps to mobile platform strategy

July 14, 2010 — 8:09am ET | By Jason Ankeny

Facebook plans to migrate away from standalone mobile applications in favor of embracing a platform strategy enabling developers to leverage its position at the top of the social networking food chain. "Where we're going from here is a platform strategy. We're going away from a one-off app strategy," said Facebook head of mobile products Erick Tseng during an appearance Tuesday at the MobileBeat conference in San Francisco. "We want to provide mobile developers with all the goodness of the open graph."

Facebook's conventional web platform supports more than 550,000 third-party applications and a million developer partners. Tseng pointed to location-based features as one segment where mobile developers could bolster the overall Facebook user experience: "If you can actually layer on top of (location) some kind of social intelligence--not just the fact that I'm near Starbucks, but the fact that 30 of my friends really like this frappuccino over the last couple months--I've got an interesting use case," he said.

Tseng reports that roughly 150 million users worldwide now access Facebook through their mobile devices. "Mobile is fast becoming our growth lever," he added. "As we begin to continue to expand, we're starting to go into geographies where phones are the predominant way you access the web. Mobile is a way we can get users to be aware of and engage with social services."

Facebook's existing smartphone application strategy has proven enormously successful with consumers. Thirty-nine percent of smartphone owners use the Facebook social networking app every 30 days, according to research firm The Nielsen Company--it is the most popular app on the iPhone (used by 58 percent of consumers) and BlackBerry (39 percent), and the second most popular on Android (51 percent).

FollowUp Delhi Twestival 2010

I am writing this to share my experiences about Delhi Twestival 2010.
25 March 2010.
Prashant Garg

After a fortnight of discussions with Mohak ( and  our co-team members)  regarding possible sponsors, venue ,figuring out contacts , tweetup meets and "reflecting the whole idea of twestival to people"  we finally came up with #DelTwestival @CafeMorrison .

To celebrate Twestival I reached a little early straight from my college with my friend Tanuj Jain(Special Thanks..!!!) to dedicate evening for this Special Cause. We helped venue staff to aware them of our exact needs. We stuck banners(below the rock band) and outside. It was fun..the environment was picking up.

We sat up an RSVP desk outside and as the clock ticked 5 pm sponsors  and Five8 band members were rolling in.  I coordinated to give them the best space available fixing up small issues like their brand visibility to make them feel comfortable. At 6pm we had people rolling in and amazed at the twitter wall we had set up. Intel Netbooks were available for live tweeting and HP wireless bluetooth printer was set to print out pics as swag. I could see the spark of change in eyes of visitors when they walked in the room and saw the *tech-thing* happening.
"Tweet, Meet Give" were the three magical words
I used with fervour to welcome people as I introduced myself as  Delhi Twestival Organiser.Nothing equals to greet new people from varied threads united for the cause.

The discussion with
Twitter handlers on education and objectives on concern was aptly scheduled after Mohak's Introductory Talk.
The message was now in air and soon Five8 Band  started rolling as the crowd stepped out of Rajneesh's World, an amazing standup comedy. Press & Media were doing its chores as people foot-tap on loud music.

The day was ours , the message was clear and the medium to spread the message was just perfect. At the end of day I realise this unique blend of creative innovation has deeply fostered the spirit of social responsibility in my young blood providing me the right platform and people to spread the word.

Top 15 reasons to use Opera

Top 15 reasons to use Opera

  1. Tomorrow’s browser today
Speed Dial, Page Zoom, Synchronize, tabs above Address Bar and many more. Opera’s features are often emulated by other browsers. Read below to see why we are often called the Research & Development center of the browser industry.

  2. Instant navigation
With Mouse Gestures and extensive keyboard shortcuts, you will never need to click the back button again.

  3. It is FAST
Opera invented fast browsing. We were fast before the other guys were even born. From day one speed has been a prime focus, something that is visible to anyone using Opera. This is not just about tests, but real life.

  4. Super safe
An outstanding security record (according to Secunia) in addition to the included fraud and malware protection.

  5. Synchronize your life
With Opera Link your PC, Mac and mobile browsers are all synced with bookmarks, notes and more.

  6. Tabbed browsing master
Opera is the pioneer of tabbed browsing with features like undo closed tab and rearrange tab order.

  7. Speed Dial
Another first from Opera--access your favorite Web sites with a thumbnail quick-dial. Opera lets YOU decide which sites should be there, unlike other browsers.

  8. Save tabs for later
With sessions you can save different tabs for opening at another time.

  9. Zoom in & out
Opera introduced this feature where you can zoom into Web pages to read small fonts and get a closer look at image details without straining your eyes.

  10. Fill forms & passwords
With the Wand, you never have to retype your information.

  11. Unique & customizable
Opera’s uniqueness lies in its personality and tradition which is obvious every time you use it. At the same time, you can customize it with hundreds of skins and configuration options.

  12. Look nowhere else
Read your RSS feeds, download BitTorrent files and access your email--all from the browser.

  13. Opera runs on all (even older) hardware
Opera believes that even your old computer deserves to continue being in use longer. Our goal is to run on up to 10 year old computers and on real world networks. Thus you will notice a significantly faster browsing experience on your old computer on a slow network, and Opera Turbo now makes it even faster.

  14. The Opera community
More than 2 million members of the most helpful, fun and passionate community anywhere.

  15. It’s FREE!
